My Year-End Crush
I thought quite a lot about what entertainment moved me this year. Certainly it has been a mix. From the exhilarating artistic high of "Black Swan" to the unexpectedly delicious chemistry of "Rizzoli & Isles," there has been plenty to enjoy. But out of all the things I watched and heard and felt this year, nothing stuck with me like Annette Bening's Nic in "The Kids Are All Right."
Those of you who hate this film or want to get into yet another drawn-out discussion about the "lesbian sleeps with a man" thing will have to just agree to disagree with me. That's not what this movie is about for me. That's not why it matters. That's not what makes it great. What makes this movie great is family. "The Kids Are All Right" speaks to the heart of what it means to be a family. How wonderful it is. How difficult it is. How you fight for it with everything you have. How you fail more often than you care to admit.
At the center of the film's complicated ball of life is Nic. The rock of the family, the taskmaster, the breadwinner. Yet Annette makes her more than just the prickly doctor who spends more time with her red wine than her wife. She makes her human. She makes her face, with it's delicate latticework of emotions, the face many of us see staring back at us in the mirror.
We work too hard, we worry too much. We let sharpness and silence fill the spaces of our familiarity with one another. Yet we do it all for the family we cherish. If pushed, we would do anything in our power to protect that family. When Nic slams the door on interloper Paul, it's with a simple, declarative truth: "This is my family." And in that moment there is no such thing as a lesbian mom or a same-sex marriage or a gay family. There is just a mom and a marriage and a family, doing what it takes to make everything all right. Happy New Year, all.

Robot teachers
Many Hollywood films describe the future and show futuristic gadgets that seem alien to the world we live in today, although the way with which technology evolves rapidly makes anything seem possible. Seeing the film I, Robot starring Will Smith we see how jobs are taken from humans and given to robots. This unfortunate topic has become a reality in primary schools in South Korea. KAIST ( Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) introduced a robot with a screen in place of a head.
The robot teaches English, reads books and dances, moving its hands and head-screen. Currently there are 29 robots around the country. Kim Mi-Young explains that the robot helps the shy students get more involved in class.
This project is disturbing, since this will be a major problem in the future. Maybe the film I Robot will seem prophetic and humans will in the future lose their jobs to robots. Also ethical dilemmas are involved, concerning child psychology. How will a robot explain feelings, show compassion or even hug a child who needs love? I may not be the most experienced in the field but these are practical issues a teacher has to deal with, especially when teaching in primary school.
Other Governments should be critical towards this project and maybe discard it since it will create ethical and practical problems not only for the pupils but also for the teachers.
FAT IS ESSENTIAL FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS
Due to the many myths that exist on the topic of early brain development, I am dedicating this week to sharing the realities of what children need. Each day throughout the week, one myth will be clarified. It is my hope that we can quickly make truth common knowledge.
Myth #4: Infants and Toddlers should be given skim milk to avoid obesity.
Truth: Nature provides all that the brain needs through breast milk. A mother's milk includes DHA which is essential to optimal cognitive and visual function. It is important when using infant formula to ensure it is fortified with DHA.

When a toddler is transitioned to cow's milk, whole milk is best. Toddlers need fat for nerve development. Myelin is the protective coating that covers communicating neurons. Myelin is very important for brain health. It helps the impulses between nerves travel faster. This insulating sheath is composed of 30% protein and 70% fat.
Zero to Three states the following:
The bottom line: For the first 12 months a baby needs breast milk or infant formula with DHA. When a child is transitioned to cows milk the brain benefits most from the fat that whole milk provides.
