My Weekend Crush

As the incomparable Mercedes Jones, Amber Riley brings her locomotive of a voice to our living rooms each week. Instantly sassy, irresistibly brassy, her Mercedes is a talent who refuses to play second fiddle, even when that’s all-too frequently the role thrust upon her. She said it herself: “I’m Beyonce. I ain’t no Kelly Rowland.” What Riley brings to Mercedes, besides those ridiculously perfect pipes, is a refreshing burst of confidence. On “Glee,” her presence speaks volumes without even using her voice. On a stage filled almost exclusively with slim starlets and six-packing studs, Riley is more of an everyteen (though in real life she is the crush-appropriate age of 24).

Her size became a subplot for a millisecond last season, but it does not define her. Instead Riley’s Mercedes is known for her confidence, strength, loyalty and – of course – that voice. I know this will be sacrilege to some, but I really loved her rendition of “Sweet Transvestite” in this week’s “Rocky Horror Glee Show” episode. Yes, it was silly they changed “transsexual Transylvania” to “sensational Transylvania.” No, she isn’t Tim Curry. But, lord, who is? Instead she gave it her own sexy stamp. Bonus points for using Brittany and Santana as backup dancers. I don’t know about you, but watching all three of them dance together is definitely good for relieving my tension. Happy weekend and Halloween, all.

Okay, I'm not a fashion expert.  I'm the last person on earth who is qualified to be commenting on European fashion trends.  Most of the sharply-dressed women I see walking around Sweden make me feel shamefully shabby, frumpy, and uncool.  I've been more than happy to embrace the stylish and practical Swedish look of skirts with tights and tall leather boots for winter.  But, what the hell is up with the GIANT scarves, ladies?  As soon as the weather gets cold, the women here pile on scarves that look something like this:

From what I've seen, the thicker and raggedier the yarn and the longer and more cumbersome the scarf, the better.  Are we going for some kind of head-slimming effect here?  How can your neck possibly get so cold that you need a scarf that would effectively warm a family of five?  Doesn't it get heavy after walking around in the rain and snow?  Is there some kind of new neck-strengthening workout regime going on that I don't know about?  Does it pose a safety risk to your head-turning abilities when you constrict yourself with a huge woolen neck brace?  Am I really that clueless about fashion to think this is possibly the silliest look a grown woman could go for?  Can anyone out there fill me in on why someone needs to wrap the equivalent of two entire sheep around their face?

My Meat

For those of you that have been following my epic birthday journey, the final installment.

As a recap my wife gave me a 'little piece' on Sunday. On my birthday which was this past Tuesday, she gave me a 'rack'.

Well to thank her for the aforementioned gifts, I decided to give her 'my meat' last night. Yes my meat (as pictured to the left). Not quite sure why it's hooking to the left, but it was still good.

When she got home from work there I was with my meat out on the counter. I trimmed the silver skin, seasoned it with fresh ground sea salt, crack peppercorn, and coriander. I then braided it with bacon. Everything is better with bacon, trust me.

I tied it up with cooking twine because wrapping it in latex would stick to the pan (sorry latex fetish guys) and browned it in a skillet for about 10 minutes a side.

I then popped my meat into her oven for about 30 minutes at 350 Celsius. When done I sliced it into 1 inch thick pieces and served it with Cajun spiced roast potatoes and peaches and cream corn. For desert we had apples sauteed in brown sugar and dusted with cinnamon.

After all that I was spent, and since I don't smoke, I went for a nap.

That's it, that was my epic birthday journey. I hope I didn't cause anyone to soil their keyboards.
